We have been using this machine at least once per month for over a year now. We purchased it based on a review in Consumer Reports. Our Doberman was just getting house broken and most of our house is carpet so we wanted to keep it looking good and smelling fresh. Prior to owning this I had borrowed a Bissell machine from a friend several times. Both times we used the Bissell the water was filthy and the carpet felt better. The one negative I would notice with the Bissell is that there was a load of carpet fibers in the machine after each use. I don't mind borrowing something and returning it in good shape but I didn't feel right about borrowing someone's steam cleaner for puppy pee so I started looking at our best option for purchase. I was considering the Bissell brand however the CR review claimed the Hoover MaxExtract was the best so we decided to give it a try.
My review of this is truly glowing. From my perspective the Hoover uses less soap and actually cleans better than the Bissell. With the Hoover our carpet fells even better under my bare feet then it did with the Bissell and doesn't get torn up. There are very few carpet fibers in the Hoover dirty water reservoir so I think it is better for our carpet. One of the other high points I notice about the Hoover is that it REALLY picks up the water that the machine puts down to clean so the carpet dries very quickly.
Cleaning tough stains: There have been a few occasions where our pup has thrown up and depending on what he ate it can be a very dark brown substance (YUK) and looks like it will stain the carpet for sure. I get the Hoover, some Spot Shot and the carpet looks 100% perfect after using this machine on it.
For our kitchen and entry areas we have travertine floors and instead of mopping I have switched over the floor cleaning option on the machine and I can assure you it does a terrific job. Normally I would get on my hand and knees to scrub the floor but I think this does every bit as good without the crawling around.
The soap I have been using for cleaning the carpets is Fresh Solutions Allergen Complete which I picked up at Sears. It works great and is fairly reasonable in price.
I have read complaints about some folks having machines that leak water but we have not experienced this at all but I will update this review and the rating if reliability becomes a problem.

We are currently renting a very tiny house for 6 people, one large (60 lbs), senior dog, one giant breed (140 lbs), puppy dog and a senior cat. The carpet when we moved in was perfect and fluffy. The hallway at about 6 months was what I would call disgusting; matted down and about 5 shades darker. So I called in a very famous carpet cleaning company and the end results were terrible. The color was the same and instead of being fluffy, the carpet was crunchy and they left a small bleached out spot on the carpet. *NOT HAPPY*
After talking with the owner, he said his wife cleaned the carpets herself - inpiring me to do the same. So I purchased this product after reading Consumer Reports, Amazon and several other reviews.
It is large and heavy, but that is a good thing since it can push down more into the carpet. Plus you get a workout while you clean - love multi-tasking! It IS very loud, so buy some ear plugs - a $2 investment.
I did 3 passes over the hallway alone and got three dirty tanks. I will admit that the hallway is now lighter than the carpet that isn't walked on at all, which means either this carpet cleaner works better than the owner's or we took some color out of the carpet? Either way, I'll be cleaning the whole carpet before we move in 2 months so it will all match again.
It is a LOT fluffier than before, but it isn't perfect like when we first moved in, but I think cleaning the carpet a few more times before we move will fix that.
It also has a rinse mode that helps get rid of any extra soap in the carpet, which is what I suspect made the carpet "crunchy" after the professional cleaners. This will also help keep the carpet cleaner, longer since any extra soap left in the carpet will only attract dirt. The rinse also helps suck up a little more water, which will also cause the carpet to get dirty faster.
It did help a ton getting the pet "oders" out from an aging dog and cat, but it does sort of have a wet dog smell in the house still. But again, I think cleaning the floor a few more times before we go will fix that.
It does cost a lot, at least for my budget, but less than carpet cleaning companies every few months AND you can clean on your schedule, not theirs and for us, the carpet actually came out cleaner when I did it.
I don't know about the hard floors - it's to big to move around the tiny kitchen, but if it works this well on carpet, my guess is that it works that well on hard floors too.
I will be testing it out in our van today to see if it get's the stain out from the cat's last visit to the vet.
I've had no problems with leaking, however the upper tank can be a little difficult to get set in right, but I suppose it will become easier with more use.
I have already recommended it to several people. Now - if they could just come up with something like this for my walls?
*Ok - sorry to make this longer but I thought I should update it. I did clean out the van and the stain came up beautifully. But now the other seats look dirty!
I have cleaned the carpets again and they are looking "fluffy" again. So I have no doubt the carpets will look perfect again before we move.
